The State of the American Breakfast
I hold this truth to be self evident about breakfast that it is the most important meal of the day.
Simultaneously I had to learn incredulously this distressing truth: Breakfast is not part of every day in every person’s life. Not nearly everyone takes the time to start the day in a lower gear permitting time for a cup of coffee or tea, a fresh baked muffin or granola the newspaper or a chat withtheir kids to get them off to a good start in their job, school and at the same the same time fortifying oneself for a good day to brave the big world out there.
As an innkeeper I often times am in awe how touched our guests are by e pretty set table at our Inn in the mornin and getting served a substantial three course breakfast. I would not classify anything I serve as ‘gourmet’ but all foods are prepared fresh with love and from scratch. That’s how it’s done in my book. Slow food has become a new movement, which I think appreciates those old values of home cooked meals and using packaged foods minimally or best not at all. All that gets presented at a beautifully set table. It’s just nice to start the day this way, don’t you think?
Sometimess guests ask for recipes, much I gladly supply. No magic here! If you can read English and can follow a recipe you can reproduce everything at home. My years come from years of cooking and baking. They are recipes that continuously produce wonderful results. So if our guests actually really use them at home, they get to forgo my year long culling process. Additionally I read recipes for fun, use inspiration from our travels and try to pick up new food ideas everywhere I go. My cookbooks are full of my own personal comments like ‘do not repeat’ or ‘great’ ‘make it again’.
So while I know it must be hard to create proper breakfasts at home during the week, and make it a ‘sit down’ meal, like every meal should be, in my mind at least, here at the Inn we got you covered. You get a complete full breakfast that I create lovingly for you, our guest at a nicely set table with fresh flowers, candles lit, birds to watch outside on our bird feeder and often other guests to chat with while you eat. Naturally Mike and I visit with our guests as well, making sure they are off to a good start during their free time they decided to share with us.
